The finale of every Telugu Wedding
The Arundhati Nakshatram.
The significance behind the ritual is to show the couple two stars - one denoting the sage Vasista, and the second his wife Arundhati. Amongst the constellation of 7 stars in the Big Dipper, only the star of Vasista has a partner star which is Arundhati. The idea behind pointing out them to a newly married couple is to signify the ever lasting loyalty and bond between a husband and wife.
For the penultimate ritual, the couple is led outside by the priest and their sisters holding the Mangalaharathi plate. A little story is recanted about the importance of the ritual, and the couple offer blessings to the Arundhati Star, which is a part of the Big Dipper constellation. As a final pose, the groom is instructed to point out the Star to the bride, and this is usually followed by amusement as the star is barely visible in the polluted skies of our cities. But the pointing to the Arundathi star makes for a very cute photo op for the couple!
